About Us

The Rose Garden Deadheaders are a team of volunteers who help keep the rose bushes looking their best throughout the year. This essential team of people come on their own time to "deadhead" the bushes, removing the spent blooms.

Each volunteer can be assigned a small part of the garden to be responsible for if they wish. The volunteers then choose the best time in their schedule to visit the garden and "deadhead". Others come and work as needed, sometimes helping place fertilizer or mulch in the beds.

Many additional volunteers assist during the annual spring pruning during January and February. They include members from other community service organizations, as well as MCC campus groups, such as those from the LDS Institute and FFA. Boy Scouts have also volunteered since the beginning of the garden, with several boys providing special help to complete their Eagle projects. Extra help comes for the fall pruning and cleanup in early October as well.

A regular Deadheader's meeting is held on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 8:30 am with coffee and doughnuts! A small group meets each Tuesday at 7:00 am in the East garden to work together.

The Public Rose Garden at MCC provides a unique opportunity to learn about rose care in the Desert Southwest through volunteer activities.

The Garden recognizes that organization and quality training are essential to a successful volunteer program.

As a volunteer in the Rose Garden at MCC you can expect the following:

   1.  To participate in meaningful work that benefits both you and the Rose Garden.

   2.  To receive accurate and valuable training and information on rose care.

   3.  To be recognized, both formally and informally for your contribution.

   4.  To be made aware of all information that directly affects your work area
         of responsibility.

   5.  To be encouraged to grow and to develop your skills through continuing education
and assignments with a higher level of responsibility.

   6.  To meet others with similar interests and to develop new friends.  "We come to the
Garden to care for the roses and in so doing come to care for each other."

   7.  To experience the joy that comes from sharing your knowledge with Garden visitors
helping them to appreciate the beauty of the rose -- our national emblem.
